Hello World!
I recently moved my website to Squarespace. For years I was hosting it at Dreamhost, coding my site from scratch in HTML/CSS with some Javascript components. But maintaining sites like that can be a big pain in the butt and what ends up happening is you have a somewhat broken website sitting online, there not being a lot of time to fix problems that arise as browsers update and support evolves. So… I gave in and decided to move over to one of the many WYSIWYG sites … in this case Squarespace.
There are many nice things using a site like this. I can add CSS and Javascript to override default settings in the design, function and rendering of the site. It also comes with many ready-to-go components for text, images, forms, social media and more. This blog is one of those fancy components. It may not have the breadth of something like Wordpress, but having a simple, easy to use blog and not something as bloated as Wordpress is nice.
That said, I do feel like I’m in a straightjacket and often limited in what I can do. Squarespace has this auto-responsive responsive layout thing that can drive one nuts. Apparently I can turn this off if I switch to their classic editor, but that would change a ton of what I’ve already built and I don’t want to do that. So I have to live with it, often wasting valuable time playing a Jenga-like game of hoping some of the content doesn’t come crashing down.
Anyway… this is my first post and I’ve run out of things to say for now. The picture has no relation to what I’ve written above. This picture of Lady Liberty does kind of serve as a metaphor for what is going on these days.
Ciao.
